Thumbs Up Concert PE

Friday, 1 August at the Port Elizabeth Opera House is where you need to be for a charity benefit concert entitled “THUMBS UP! No End to Caring” brought to you by Algoa FM in association with Magnetic Storm.   Directed by Mandy Gurr- Snyman with Lindi Doubell as Assistant Director and Garth Tavares as Vocal & Music Director, this one-night-only event will feature the finest names in the entertainment industry such as Strictly Come Dancing’s Ian von Memerty and South Africa’s musical theatre Diva Divine, Aviva Pelham, who hails from Cape Town.

The event will be in aid of raising 100% of the profits to two outstanding charities.

Firstly, the Motor Neurone Disease Association whose mission statement is "To provide and promote the best possible support for people living with M.N.D, their families and carers; and to raise public awareness". Mandy herself was diagnosed in 1998 with a Motor Neurone Disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a terminal neuro-muscular illness that has left her wheel-chair bound.

Affiliated to the M.N.D.A is our second charity - the St. Francis Hospice, who's professionally trained and caring Sisters provide home-based palliative care for the terminally ill and their families voluntarily.  Neither of these charities receive any government funding.

With Carol-Anne Kelleher and Roy Williams from Algoa FM as our M.C's plus around 20 top entertainers gathering on the night in an all star variety style show with the And All That… Jazz Band, as well as the Palm Court Quartet, audiences are guaranteed to be thoroughly spellbound with music, dance and laughter!  Tickets are available from Computicket at R100.00 (Upstairs) and R120.00 (Downstairs).

MND GLOBAL AWARENESS DAY

The two fundraisers held on 21 June 2007 to coincide with Global Awareness Day, went off very well and tickets for both events were sold out ! Details of the events are below.

Our sincere and grateful thanks go to Roxy Levy (our Fundraiser in Cape Town) and Liz Keth (our Nursing Consultant in Gauteng), their helpers and donors, and of course all our friends and families who supported these fundraisers and who contributed to the success thereof.

Mandy Snyman (also known in her singing days as Mandy Gurr), a MND patient from Port Elizabeth, contributed to Global Awareness Day by arranging for MND patient Brian Gouws and his wife Elaine to be interviewed on Morning Live on 21 June. An article also featured in PE’s Herald of that day. WELL DONE MANDY !

The set-up of this website has been sponsored by Jeremy Hindley and Lafras Steyn, both PALS and photographed above. We very much hope that another benefactor will come forward to sponsor the ongoing upkeep costs of the site.
